Happy Fall, Cooley Community! During the month of October, Guidance class will be focusing on our Character Counts pillar of the month, which is Respect. This year at Cooley we are taking our PBIS core values --- Respect Yourself, Respect Others, Respect Property --- very seriously, so it should be no surprise that this is the first Character Counts pillar to be discussed in class! We will also be continuing PATHS lessons related to the theme of respect and anti-bullying, since October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Check out the graphic below to learn more about the differences between bullying, teasing, and conflict. Finally, students will be introduced to mindfulness, meditation, and whole body listening. Learning these skills early can improve attention and focus, which is crucial to a successful school year!

Additionally, Group Counseling sessions will begin in October. Stay tuned for further details on this, permission slips will be coming home this month to be signed.

Hope you all have a wonderful October and a great start to the Fall season!

Greetings Cooley community, and welcome back to school! My name is Casey Salerno and I am the new full-time counselor here at D.G. Cooley Elementary. For this month's "Counselor's Corner" piece, I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself to you all.

This is my first year with Clarke County Public Schools, and I am very excited to be a part of this wonderful and welcoming community. I received my B.A. in Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and then went on to obtain an Ed.M. in School Counseling from Rutgers University. I was born and raised in Monmouth County, New Jersey and have been missing my 1.5 year old family puppy like crazy since moving here to VA! Some of my interests include hiking, going to the beach, writing, playing soccer, and traveling.

As a new part of the School Counseling program this year, I will be pushing into classrooms to work on implementing the PATHS curriculum through Guidance classes on the specials rotation. The PATHS curriculum is a comprehensive program for promoting emotional and social competencies while reducing aggression and behavior problems in elementary-aged students. It is a well-researched Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program that has received high recognition and recommendations from a number of different sources.

I also will be meeting with students in individual and small group settings throughout the year. If you ever have any questions or concerns related to a student’s academic, social, or emotional well-being, please feel free to contact me during school hours by calling the main office or emailing me at salernoc@clarke.k12.va.us. You can also follow me on Twitter @CooleyCounselor. I look forward to a great year working with all students, parents, and staff at D.G. Cooley!
